... Creating Families,
            4 Paws At A Time

Every day innocent pets are left homeless and abandoned in Chicagoland. Adopt-A-Pet has found loving homes for over 15,000 of those cats and dogs.

If you are looking for a family pet, consider adopting a wonderful pet from Adopt-A-Pet. Most of our cats and dogs are kept in foster homes, where they live as part of a family. Not only is this beneficial for the animal, but it also helps us create a purrfect match between an animal and a prospective adopter.

IT'S NOT "COOL" TO KEEP YOUR PETS OUTSIDE IN THE HOT WEATHER!

This summer, be mindful of leaving your pets out in the yard too long.   Don't overdo it.   Remember, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your furry friends.  When you are out with your pets, be sure to keep plenty of water around and stay cool in the shade.

Also remember NEVER to leave your dog in a parked car, even just to run a quick errand.  Not only can this be a deadly mistake, but in most jurisdictions it's a crime.   Even on mildly warm days when the temperature is 70 degrees, and even with the windows cracked open, and even with the car parked in the shade, it only takes a few minutes for the temperature in a car to rise to more than 100 degrees, and on even hotter days it can rise to 120 degrees and above.   It takes only minutes for a dog to succumb to heatstroke and suffocation.  If you love your dog, leave it at home where it is safe!

Spread the word to your friends to keep their dogs out of hot vehicles too.  And if you see a pet in a vehicle on a hot day, take immediate action.   Note the car description, then go to the nearest stores and ask the manager to page the owner.   Call the police, which usually can respond much faster than animal control departments.   The police have the capability to enter the vehicle and rescue the animal.

I wish I could tell my story. Maybe you can guess it’s not a ‘pretty’ story. But, I’m ready to turn the page. Are YOU the one to help me write my Happy Ending?

I’m a 6-year-old, 60 pound, mixed breed that looks like a basenji, possibly with some shepherd or husky. I was raised in a neglectful home, and when I got pregnant – again – and had my puppies, I got sick. I also tore my leg on something in the yard and had an infected open wound on my leg that made it uncomfortable for me to stand. The people I lived with (I hate to call them my “family”) didn’t want to deal with me anymore – I was too much trouble and they didn’t have the time nor inclination to bring me to the vet. They just wanted to be rid of the whole mess, so they called Animal Control -- like they were the garbage man or something -- and asked them to take me and my puppies away. He said if they didn’t come and take us now, that me and my babies would all be killed. Animal Control wasn’t allowed to take pets from private parties, so they called Adopt-A-Pet who then stepped in and rescued me and my babies. They sent over an emergency transporter to pick us up, and we were whisked away to the animal hospital where we were cleaned up and taken care of. This is where the story turns better . . . This was the best day of my life.

Now I’m in a nice, friendly foster home, my leg healed long ago, and I’m perfectly healthy. My babies have all been adopted into their forever homes. And now, I’m ready to move on to mine.

Let me tell you a little about myself – My foster mom is helping me write this.  She is a dog trainer and has made me feel SO much better about myself.   This is what she says:

“Bubbles is a very loving, loyal, cuddly girl that is very dedicated to her family. She bonds quickly and is very devoted to her people. Bubbles has so many good qualities: She is housebroken, doesn't chew, listens, and knows basic commends. She likes to go for long walks and she walks nicely on the leash. She is a real lady in the house and what makes her the happiest is when she can sit down next to you, snuggle up and be petted. She looks at you with such grateful eyes, it makes your heart just melt.  She is definitely a talker when she wants something . . . not a barker . . . a talker.  In this video she's rooting for the Chicago Blackhawks:

Her new family should have some experience with dogs and know how to take charge as her pack leader in order to guide her through new situations with confidence.   Bubbles is fine with other dogs when her pack leader is around to introduce them (she is learning that dog play is not such a bad idea!), and she is doing fine with the cats she currently lives with.   She has come SUCH a long way, and it's time for her to find a forever home where she can continue to blossom and be the sweet, loved dog she deserves to be."

So, I am looking for a new home -- a new start -- a new life. If you think you’re the one that I’m meant to spend the rest of my life with, please give Adopt-A-Pet a call.  I’m really a beautiful girl and if you are truly looking to "save" a dog, you won't find a dog more deserving than me.  I know I'll make someone a great pet!   Is it you??
HANDSOME BLACK MALES SEEK COLOR-BLIND LIFELONG COMPANIONS

Ace and Samuel are the sweetest brothers, now 15 months old.  They have been with Adopt-A-Pet since they were teeny babies.  Due to the glut of kittens in the summer season, Ace and Samuel have literally grown up in their foster home, being constantly passed over in favor of other kittens.  Their crime?  Their color.   Ace and Samuel suffer from what is known in the animal shelter world as Black Cat Syndrome.   What this means is that black cats are the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized in pounds all over the country.  Of course, Ace and Samuel's lives are not at risk since they are in Adopt-A-Pet's care.  In that sense they are the lucky ones.   But, Ace and Samuel really need to find their forever homes!   Ace is a sleek black and Samuel is black and white, both are short-haired.

Their wonderful foster mom has this to say about them:   They are quite the definition of brotherly love:  they play, wrestle and groom each other when not napping or being curious about what our family is doing.  They curl up with our daughter at night and in the morning patiently wait for her or another family member to wake up.  Sometimes they will sit on your lap but more usually want to be near us.  They love having their bellies rubbed and call to us when they want some attention.  They are truly bonded and would be heartbroken if separated. Ace and Samuel would love to live together in a forever home with children and activity so they can be a part of it!    Therefore, if you are looking for a sweet pair, here they are!

Featured Cat

   Meet Wilson!

Wilson is such a handsome orange tabby with the cutest pink nose. He is about 3 years old. He is an extremely loving and affectionate cat. His foster mom has decided that he would probably be happiest as an "only" pet and that is most likely the type of environment he came from. When the other pets in the foster home are not around, he will jump on your lap or rub up against you and wants lots of cuddling and attention. He will make a wonderful companion and lap cat.
